Kansas City Wildlife Education: How To Get Rodents Out Of A Wall If you hear a scratching sound coming from your wall, this is a good indication that there is a rodent inside of it. Wild animals are always looking for shelter and if you happen to have an opening in your walls or siding, they will find a way inside to take advantage of the shelter in your home. This can lead to plenty of problems for you. In the best case scenario, you will just have to deal with a scratching sound and maybe some urine or feces. In the worst case, they will chew your walls, insulation, wires, and anything else in the walls. Because of this, you need to get rodents out of your walls as soon as you can.

Figure Out The Animal
The first thing to do is to figure out what type of rodent it is inside your walls. You can get a good idea based on the type of sound that they make and when they make it. Mice, for example, will leave the walls at night in search of food and tend to have entrances along the base of the walls. Squirrels, on the other hand, are more likely to exit the walls during the day and leave along the roof line. If you actually see the animal, then you will be able to positively identify it as a mouse, rat, squirrel, or other rodent. You may also be able to do so based on droppings. An expert can help you identify the animal if necessary.

Find The Entrance
After you know the type of rodent you are dealing with, it is time to figure out how they got into your walls. This involves a thorough inspection of your home, inside and out. Focus on the areas where you heard the scratching but don't neglect any area. Smaller rodents like mice can even use your plumbing pipes as entrances. You have to find every entrance since missing just one leaves an opening for new animals to enter your walls after you get rid of the original rodents. Because of this, it is a good idea to hire a professional to help you.

Trapping And Removing
The most popular method for getting rodents out of your walls depends on the type of rodent in question. In the case of rats and mice, most homeowners and many wildlife removal experts tend to opt for traps. You can go the humane route and use live traps, seal up all the entrances, then release the rodents outside. If you have missed any spots, however, they will simply return. A live trap also works on larger rodents, such as squirrels.

Another option is to use a lethal trap to catch the rodents, but only smaller ones. Always opt for snap traps if you go this route since they are the most humane and will kill the rodent instantly. Other traps, such as glue boards, will simply catch the animal and leave it to starve to death, a painful way to die. Be sure to place the traps correctly for the best results. This means putting them along any area where you see a mice trail. You can also put the trap directly outside the entrance the rodent is using to get inside.

Exclusion
In the case of larger rodents, such as squirrels, most experts will suggest that you rely on the exclusion method to get rid of rodents in the wall. You will still need to find all the entry points to use this method, but instead of sealing up all of them initially, you leave one open. Cover this entrance with a one-way door or other exclusion device. Within a few days, you should double check that the rodents are gone and then seal the remaining hole.

Clean Up
Although it can be challenging to clean up after a rodent that was in your walls, it is necessary. You don't want to leave behind rodent waste as this can begin to rot and smell bad. Cleaning up also gives you the chance to assess any damage caused by the rodents so you can take care of it. If you don't feel up to the task of getting a rodent out of your wall by yourself, you can always hire a professional to help you.

Prevent Reentry
To make sure that the rodents don't go back inside your walls or that new rodents don't take their place, double check that all potential entry points are actually sealed up. After this, take some steps to discourage them from coming onto your property on the first place or gaining access to your home. Trimming back trees right next to your house, for example, can help as it makes it harder for squirrels and other rodents to reach any gaps in the walls. You should also hide or remove any food sources. This includes raking up fallen leaves and fruit from trees and ensuring your garbage cans are securely closed.
